Humor ! how to use it in your speech?

March 9th 2010 16:43

Telling a joke can be an effective device for the speaker. It can put the audience at ease and it it make them more favorably disposed toward you .The successful telling of a joke or amusing story communicate to the audience that you are not such a bad fellow after all especially if you are affiliated with an unpopular opinion or with a rival political party for example.

The employment of humor on a speech requires a certain delicacy of judgment ,there are situations where it should not be used at all.Another thing to bear in mind that in attempting to do jokes you are ,in a sense competing with full-time practitioners of professional comedians on TV ,RADIO ,and films.

In considering whether or not you should use humor , There are only few points to consider
a)do not make it he center of your speech
b) make it a brief joke.
c) better to be an amusing story
d)relevant to the topic of your speech.
e) and preferably something based on personal experience.

Do not start with a joke especially if you do it for the sake of a joke that has nothing to do with anything. You'll appear to be trying too hard, it will be just a distraction for which People tend to resist when they think you're just trying to make them laugh.

If you decided to start your speech with a joke make it to a very slight degree . You'll never be criticized for giving an audience too little humor ,but you can get into dreadful trouble giving them too much..If all goes well ,you can then in later talks increase the funniness component.

Never use inappropriate jokes , like offensive jokes, make fun of certain race or minority. It isn't that such jokes won't get laugh;they usually will but there is also a good chance that you will appear as rude and that there are many people in your audience will feel offended.

Another thing is to combine emotion and humor as this can be very effective. This is one of best kept the secret used by the most moving speakers like Leo Buscaglia. Proper joke that convey great deal of warmth . BUT such loving manner wold not be appropriate to a speech about scientific matter, sport or corporation's reports.

Humor is better incorporated in public speeches ,wedding speeches, and birthdays.

By utilizing humor IN YOUR SPEECH ,you can alleviate the atmosphere ,add a new depth and engagement to your public speaking. BUT You need to be careful about timing, delivery and the sensitivity of your jokes to your audience. Get it wrong and your audience will become your worst enemy.
